The Antalya Aquarium, the fifth largest in the world in terms of tank capacity and the second largest in Europe, is located in the Arapsuyu Olbia Canyon in Konyaaltı, Antalya. The complex, built by the city council of Antalya, comprises 40 aquariums with a total water volume of approx.7.5 million liters, tens of thousands of fish and marine animals as well as four aquariums with different marine themes.
In addition to the underwater world, the complex also includes the WildPark Snow World and Ice Museum, created with natural snow and home to the world's most poisonous and interesting species, a cinema, an amphitheater, dining areas and shops that travel the world's oceans of dimensional technology.
The Antalya Aquarium, which is welcomed every 13 months after its opening in 2012, has a closed area of 12,000 square meters on 30 decades of land.
Feeling of being under water
The main design concept for the complex, designed by Bahadır Kul Architecture, was realized with the aim of disappearing into the silhouette and creating harmony with the topography. The design reverses the relationship between the bottom and the submarine and gives visitors the feeling of being on the water.
The ground floor, which characterizes the design of the aquarium and forms the starting, collecting and spreading point, creates a shady area that protects both from the sun and from the wind when pulled back. The canopy in this public space refers to the flowing nature of the water with its undulating shape. The shadow also forms the information points, dining areas, amphitheater and toll booths by bending and standing up.
The aquarium trip begins with a ramp in the public space and reaches the exhibition area. Each stop on the route, which continues with a variety of interesting topics, has its own theme. The trip ends with the longest aquarium tunnel in the world.
Travel in the tunnel
The aquarium tunnel in the Antalya Aquarium is 131 meters long and 3 meters wide. The main tank that forms the tunnel contains more than 5 million liters of water.
The first part of the tunnel, which is thematically divided into three parts, is dedicated to tropical reef life. This section is connected to the water cave where the creatures in the main tank can be most closely observed. The third part, the longest part of the tunnel, houses interesting marine animals around the submarine wreck. At the exit of the tunnel there is a very impressive part in which sharks and stingrays move over the visitors.
Impressive underwater decoration
The interior of the main tank in the aquarium belongs to the world-famous Italian sculptor Benedetti. The artist designed and produced the decorations, including the largest coral reef statue in the world, in South Africa. The decors were later brought to Antalya and placed in the aquarium. The most interesting of the sculptures is the exact copy of an Italian fighter jet that plunged into the Mediterranean during World War II.
Local sources
The region's natural resources were most effectively used in the construction of the Antalya Aquarium. The natural environment created with the world's best water system technologies for marine animals is created by taking water from the sea. In addition, the green roof, which is insulated from heat transfer, enables natural air conditioning and the protection and enhancement of biological diversity.
